Preparations are on to set up a stem cells transplant unit in Al Amal Hospital by the year-end to provide optimal care to patients in need of advanced techno-therapy and are unable to afford treatment abroad, an official source at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) said.
A first-of-its-kind in the region stem cells laboratory will be set up simultaneously and will be equipped with latest medical equipment and qualified technologists from HMC.
The laboratory will provide services for tissue matching, microbiology, blood and immune diseases, chemistry and blood bank.
Some 30 stem cells transplant operations are expected to take place annually in the first years. Stem cells will be derived from blood components or bone marrow at Al Amal Hospital, Al Sharq daily reported.
The unit will compose of five rooms to isolate patients, and will mainly treat blood diseases, metabolism disorders, thalassaemia and AIDS.
Designed according to international medical advanced standards, it will be run by a professional medical team specialising in organ transplant, blood diseases, pain treatment, psychology, therapeutic pharmacology, nutrition and physiotherapy specialists.
