Students from Qatar University (QU) participated in the Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk held in Doha.
The students’ participation followed the 2nd annual breast cancer awareness campaign at QU from October 25 to 27 which was organised by the Qatar Pharmacy Undergraduate Society (QPhUS) at the College of Pharmacy (CPH).
During the campaign themed ‘Qatar University Thinks Pink’ over 100 students attended workshops, discussion sessions, private counselling, and self-examination training conducted by healthcare experts from QU, Al Amal Hospital and Qatar National Cancer Society (QNCS).
The students wore pink in support of the international campaign and in solidarity with cancer survivors and those affected.
The highlight of the event was a workshop about breast cancer and self examination led by guest speaker Al Amal Hospital nurse Mirvat Wehbe who is also a QNCS volunteer.
Other presenters were MD RasGas Medical Centre Dr Iyad Bardaweel on breast cancer in men; Fulbright scholar Dr Sara Al Dahir on religion and breast cancer prevention; breast cancer survivor Amani Halawa; QU Associate Professor of Pharmacology Dr Lars Hedin on the role of diet in cancer prevention, and QNCS coordinator of health culture Dr Mahasin Okasha on stress and breast cancer.
Founder of Think Pink Qatar Karen Al Kharouf discussed the Awareness Walk and the importance of keeping abreast with information about the disease.
“Our goal is to promote awareness amongst students and encourage them to share the information at home with their families,” said Amina Radoui, Internal President, QPhUS.
