Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) yesterday launched an awareness campaign and other activities on diabetes.
Patients and visitors at the HMC were checked for their blood sugar levels, cholesterol level and the carbon monoxide level of smokers.
Also the medical staff explained and guided the people on various self-care methods.
“The response from people was great, it was beyond expectation. We received an unprecedented number of more than 300 people,” said Dr Sara Mohammed Darwish, Consultant Diabetes/Endocrine and Diabetes Day Organiser for this year at HMC.
The medical staff educated the people on podiatry, diet, prevention and medication on diabetes for children and adults.
This awareness campaign will be continued today at the lobby of the Hamad General Hospital between 9am and 11am.
Visitors at some supermarkets were also tested for blood sugar and was advised and educated about the decease. The World Diabetes Day, the primary global awareness day on diabetes was marked on November 14, though awareness activities in Doha were postponed due to the Eid holidays.
As part of educating the medical staff, a special lecture on the updates in diabetes management will be held at Medical Education Center tomorrow. A workshop will be held on November 25 for school nurses and teachers at HMC to educate them about diabetes among children and how to deal with them.
Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) and Landmark group will launch the first ‘Beat Diabetes’ walkathon in Doha. The walk will start from the Doha Corniche, near Sheraton hotel to shed light on diabetes and its complications.
An evening session will be held at Doha Sheraton for medical professionals which will deal on the issue of diabetes prevention.
