Media reports indicate that two more cases of measles have been reported from the northern side of Brisbane, triggering fears that the disease is spreading.
Queensland Health said the cases began with a group of teenagers who had visited some popular shopping areas in the region. A Queensland Health spokeswoman also said that some teens were traveling in India when they were infected.
Queensland Health communicable diseases branch senior director Christine Selvey said that these cases of traveling teens were unrelated to the initial cases, but it nevertheless represented increasing number of cases, demonstrating that the disease was spreading.
“Of particular concern to us is that on Thursday, 20 January, when one of the children would have been infectious, he went to the 11.50am screening of the movie Gulliver’s Travels at the Stafford AMC cinemas,” Dr Selvey said in a statement.
She added that if people were in this particular location and developed symptoms, they should seek medical advice. “Everyone should make sure that they are vaccinated against measles, as we are seeing a lot of people who have acquired measles overseas who may unknowingly spread the virus in public places,” she cautioned.
