52 % of Iranians are vulnerable to non-communicable diseases

TEHRAN – Low consumption of fruits and vegetables, smoking, lack of activity, obesity and hypertension are 5 main non-communicable risk factors affecting 52% of Iranians, Fars news agency reported.

Dr. Jalil Koohpayeh Zadeh, director of the department of non-communicable risk factors at Health Ministry, said Only 10 to 12 percent of people take enough fruits and vegetables, while everyone should have 5 units of them a day.

He said life style correction, proper diet, enough activity and non-smoking are very important in preventing non-communicable diseases.

A study of 30,000 examples of risk factors, taken from 2005 to 2010, shows that no ideal progress has been made in preventing such diseases, he noted.

He added the Ministry of Health is not the only responsible body for public health and other organizations should play their role as well, Koohpayeh Zadeh explained.

Koohpayeh Zadeh said 50% of people, especially women, between ages 15 to 64 are obese.
