Are You At Risk For Lung Disease? Learn About Spirometry! Canada

It is estimated that every 20 minutes, one Canadian dies of lung disease and many of those deaths can be prevented if diagnosed early, says Heather Borquez, president and CEO of the Canadian Lung Association. “Spirometry is a simple breathing test that can help detect and diagnose lung disease.”

On October 14th, the Canadian Lung Association is celebrating the launch of World Spirometry Day by offering Canadians free spirometry events.

For John Staples of Corner Brook, Newfoundland says he will never smoke again after receiving a spirometry test.

The 57-year-old wanted to quit smoking for years, but seeing his spirometry test results gave him the wake-up call he needed to make a better lifestyle choice and quit smoking.

After smoking for 44 years, John started to notice troubles with his breathing, “Sometimes you can get out of breath from just laying down,” Staples says. “I had shortness of breath all of the time.” When the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association announced they were holding a public spirometry event, John knew he had to take the opportunity to get his lungs tested.

“The event raised my awareness of lung problems and the importance of smoke-free living. I don’t think I’ll ever smoke again,” he says. John encourages as many people as possible to get out and get their lung tested. He believes that spirometry should be part of everyone’s preventive maintenance, “We all get regular check-up on our cars,” he says “Why not have regular check-up on our lungs too.”
