Campaign on diabetes awareness

The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) in collaboration with the Primary Health Care, Hamad Medical Corporation and Qatar Diabetes association has launched a national campaign to raise public awareness about diabetes.

The campaign launched on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day will continue throughout the month, according to Dr Sheikha Al Anoud bint Mohammad Al Thani, Director of Health Promotion and Non-communicable Diseases at SCH.

Comprehensive examinations are carried out for the public visiting the campaign venues to detect the causes of the disease.

Examinations include measurement of weight, height, body mass, blood pressure and blood sugar in addition to taking information from visitors about their physical activity, their daily intake of vegetables and fruits and whether they smoke or not.

Sheikha Al Anoud pointed out that physicians will then advice patients and refer them to specialists for final examinations. Heavy smokers are referred to the “Stop Smoking Clinic” at Hamad Medical Corporation to educate them on how to control diabetes by quitting smoking and other measures.

All the Haj pilgrims will be provided with a bag containing glucometer (home blood sugar monitoring device) especially for those on insulin. A workshop will be held at the SCH auditorium for school administrators on November 25 to raise awareness on the disease, its causes in addition to methods of managing diabetes among students, especially during school hours.
