Dementia reversal diet claims ‘are misleading’
A major dementia charity has criticised reports which suggest that a change in diet could reverse dementia.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society, “misleading” statements that suggest the use of dietary supplements can reverse the degenerative effects of dementia do nothing but provide vulnerable people with false hope.
The charity insists that dementia is a progressive condition and treatments are available to slow the onset of the disease, but there is no proven way of reversing the condition.
However, there are things that can be done in earlier life to reduce the risk of developing dementia – one of which is eating well.
“The best advice is to ensure that you eat a healthy and balanced diet, take regular exercise and get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly,” the charity explains.
Ian Weatherhead, the lead nurse for Admiral Nursing DIRECT at Dementia UK, recently called for more funding to be provided for dementia research, in order to avoid a crisis that will engulf the country for the next 40 or 50 years.
