Diabetes Association to hold endocrinologists’ meet

The Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) will host the first International American Association for Clinical Endocrinologist conference on diabetes, obesity and endocrine disease in the Gulf to be held in Doha next month.

The conference will take place at Doha Sheraton from January 14 to January 16. The QDA and the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have partnered with the American Association for Clinical Endocrinologist (AACE) to organise
the event.

The conference will enlighten the participating physicians on professionals skills in relation to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the Middle East. Up to 20 percent of the adult population in some countries in the region are diabetic.

Increasing number of people are being diagnosed with diabetes mainly due to a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits.

Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Dr Osama Hamdy said: “With all the new research, practices and technology available, quality of care for diabetes has radically changed. We want to make sure that healthcare professionals are up to date on how to best prevent and manage diabetes, particularly in the Gulf where it is such an issue”

The conference is headed by a group of international speakers from the Harvard Medical School, who will be joined by leading endocrinologists from the Gulf region.

The conference will help achieve the HMC’s objectives to spread awareness of the importance of early detection and management of diabetes, said Dr Mahmoud Zirie, head of endocrinology at HMC.

Proper training and education of healthcare professionals is an essential component of any national prevention and control strategy for the management of diabetes.

The Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) strives to help the people with diabetes and those who are at risk of developing it by providing innovative patient care, diabetes education and related services.
