Dubai: A year-long exhibition featuring the Arab and Muslim contribution to medicine and science will run at the Dubai Healthcare City and will be open to the public.
The display of large poster prints will be on show at the Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage.
It features Arab and Muslim pioneers in the fields of medicine and science including Ibn Sina, the “Prince of Physicians”.
Sina, known as Avicenna in the Western world, wrote the Canon of Medicine, which was a classic reference work used in European universities until the 19th century.
The prints also feature Al Razi, who is known as the pioneer of classical medicine. Sina’s many original observations included the idea the diseases could be spread by water and soil.
Also included are prints about Abu Raihan Mohammad Bin Ahmad Al Beiruni (973-1048).
Al Beiruni is acknowledged as the father of geodesy — the branch of mathematics concerned with the shape and area of the earth.
He is also known as the founder of Indology, the study of Indian history and culture, and as the first anthropologist.
Al Beiruni was celebrated for his work in pharmacology, which included in-depth study of medicinal herbs and minerals.
Centre chairman Juma Al Majid said he hoped the exhibition would help people understand the Islamic contribution to humanity.
“This exhibition is only a first glimpse on what our forefathers have achieved in the medicine and science field,” he said.
Dubai Healthcare City executive director Dr Aisha Abdullah said: “The prints are from rare manuscripts and show the various pioneering works done by Arabs.”
