Experts praise HMC’s cancer care for kids

Paediatric cancer care at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently earned the commendation of three paediatric cancer experts, who were visiting Qatar for a workshop held by HMC for medical staff involved in providing cancer care for children.

Dr Abdullah Al Nasser, an oncologist from Saudi Arabia’s King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, expressed satisfaction at the level of care provided for children with cancer at HMC.

“HMC is taking a leading role in the whole region in terms of providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and management. It is moving in the right direction, with the right vision, and with the right strategy. Qatar has played a leading role to get those involved in paediatric oncology in the Middle East to come together through the Middle East Childhood Cancer Alliance (MECCA),” Dr Al Nasser elaborated.

Dr Al Nasser also mentioned HMC’s collaborations with prestigious organisations such as Heidelberg University Medical Center in Germany, SickKids Hospital in Canada, and Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr Joseph Mirro, a nationally recognised cancer expert in the USA who is currently vice president of cancer programme at Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, also lauded HMC’s paediatric oncology programme.

Professor Andreas Kulozik, a visiting expert from Heidelberg University, highlighted the institution’s longstanding collaboration with HMC.

“Through this collaboration, we have been able to implement the latest and most comprehensive paediatric cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up programme for children in Qatar. Patients who require further advanced treatment are referred to the cancer institute in Heidelberg,” he said.
