Giving GPs NHS funds ‘too dodgy’

Doctors could give themselves bumper pay rises under the ConDem plans to put them in charge of their own budget.

They are set to be freed from Department of Health control under the shake-up and will be handed £80billion of NHS cash.

But MPs warn it could increase corruption and force hospitals to close.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley refused to say if doctors would be able to pay themselves more.

He told the Commons Health Select Committee: “One of the principles of negotiation is not to pre-judge them, as it were, show one’s hand in the financial aspects.”

Under the changes, the 150 primary care trusts will be axed and responsibility handed to groups of GP surgeries.

Lib Dem MP Andrew George warned poorer areas may not get a fair share of resources.
