H1N1 case detected in Jordan

Minister of Health Mahmoud Sheyyab announced Sunday that authorities have detected a new H1N1 case in the Kingdom.

He said that a lady diagnosed with the flu was being treated at a private hospital, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The minister was quoted as saying by the agency that the return of the epidemic is possible in winter, stressing that authorities are ready to deal with the disease, which was declared an epidemic in the Kingdom last year.

Sheyyab said that a complete plan that addresses all aspects of the problem is in place including diagnosis, treatment, medication and preparedness of health facilities to receive patients. He added that the plan will be circulated among all concerned agencies and health institutions.

He said that health authorities are dealing with the possibility of the return of the swine flu as a seasonal occurrence, saying that preventive measures will focus on children and old men and other vulnerable groups.

The official, who was speaking at a meeting of a national committee tasked with fighting swine flu, also said that the ministry is in contact with the World Health Organisation over the development.
