Health drive for workers

BAHRAIN’s workers stand to benefit from free medical tests and even free medication during a series of health drives organised by volunteers.

The Lions Club of Riffa is hoping to conduct check-ups on a weekly or fortnightly basis, club director Mohammed Salim Ibrahim told the GDN.

It follows an event during which 145 labourers were examined at Haji Hasan Group’s staff accommodation, Salmabad.

The workers’ blood pressure and blood sugar levels were tested during the three-hour event.

Two doctors and other medical staff from Al Raja Clinic performed the examinations and workers diagnosed with medical conditions were referred to clinics or hospital for follow-up.

They were also given over-the-counter basic medication donated by Al Ruyan pharmacy.

“If it is a major case, we support them, we help them with some of the costs such as screening costs,” said Mr Ibrahim.

He revealed that medical camps would be held weekly or fortnightly, depending on the availability of medical staff and supplies.

The next event is lined up for this Friday for more workers from the same company.

However, after that it is hoped the check-ups will be rolled out to other firms.

“We’ve seen the benefits it (the free medical checks) has had on the workers, and we have decided to continue to hold the event throughout the year,” added Mr Ibrahim.

“Al Raja Clinic has promised to provide the medical staff for the next three camps and it will be a continuous process.”
