Helping hand: Reshaping lives

Ashwaq Hamoud has made a life out of crafting limbs, breasts and other body parts.

However, little did the Emirati prosthetics maker know 14 years ago that she would one day be the first Emirati woman doing something like this when she applied for a secretary’s job at the state-owned Rashid Hospital.

“I had a completely different plan in mind,” Ashwaq, Senior Medical Sculptor at Rashid Hospital, said.

“I thought I would work as a secretary and then pursue higher education in business administration.”

However, events took a different turn. Soon after obtaining her executive secretarial diploma in 1996, she went job hunting for a position she thought would best fit her educational background.

Rashid Hospital hired her – not as a secretary but as a physiotherapy assistant. “‘What bad luck’, I thought then.

“But, then, I was wrong. It was [in fact] great luck,” Ashwaq told XPRESS.
