The Institute Of Medicine and Robert Wood Johnson released A Summary of the October 2009 Forum on the Future of Nursing: Acute Care. This publication summarizes the discussions of the Forum, which brought together more than 300 participants at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA to explore new approaches that involve nurses providing safe, efficient, and effective care in acute care settings and across the health continuum. The Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI), cosponsored by AMIA & HIMSS, provided testimony at the October Forum which was presented by Joyce Sensmeier MS, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, Vice President, Informatics HIMSS and ANI co-chair. ANI’s position is that “meaningful use” of health information technology (HIT), when combined with best practice and evidence-based care delivery, will improve healthcare for all Americans. This is an essential foundation for the future of nursing and informatics nurses must be engaged as leaders in the effective use of information technology to impact the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.
