Algeria and Kuwait signed a series of agreements yesterday aimed at increased co-operation on the latest step of the Emir’s North African tour, Algerian media reported.
Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah and Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika signed seven agreements covering areas such as justice and extradition, shipping, health and tourism, APS news agency reported.
The Emir is expected to visit the Martyr’s Memorial, which commemorates Algeria’s war of independence from 1954 to 1962, where he will lay flowers and recite a passage from the Qur’an.
The leader of the oil-rich Middle Eastern emirate arrived in Algeria from Tunisia. His North African trip will take him to Morocco today and then to Mauritania.
Iranian leader calls Saudi king ahead of visit
Saudi’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz received a telephone call from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinijad yesterday, Saudi state media reported.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the unusual phone call between the two leaders of the regional rivals comes ahead of Ahmadinejad’s first-time visit to Lebanon scheduled for today.
SPA did not report details of the conversation, simply stating that the leaders discussed regional issues.. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is in talks with the US to sign the largest military arms sale in US history aimed at curbing Iranian influence in the region.
