More Women In Luxembourg To Benefit From Mammography With Lowest Possible Dose

Luxembourg has invested in two additional digital Sectra MicroDose Mammography systems for their breast screening program. With this investment even more women in Luxembourg will benefit from mammography examinations with the lowest radiation dose on the market.

Three hospitals in Luxembourg made their first investments in Sectra’s unique, photon counting mammography systems in 2009. The two new systems will replace both analog and digital systems of other technologies.

“Luxembourg currently has a 65% participation rate in mammography screening, which is relatively high, but of course we want to increase this number”, says Astrid Scharpantgen, coordinator of the screening program. “Since fear of radiation is one of the factors which impact the participation rate, offering the low dose of the Sectra systems hopefully will make fewer women hesitate to show up for their checkups.”

As low radiation dose as possible

Mammography screening is the best method for early breast cancer detection. Breast tissue is sensitive to radiation, and it is therefore crucial that the dose is as low as possible. This is especially important in mammography screening, which involves examination of a large number of healthy women. With superior image quality, Sectra’s mammography system, Sectra MicroDose Mammography, generates by far the lowest dose of radiation of all of the systems offered on the market. Sectra MicroDose Mammography is based on photon counting technology.

Sectra MicroDose contributes to reducing radiation doses in 18 European countries, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. The Sectra MicroDose solution is used in most major mammography screening programs in Europe.
