Nobel Laureate to speak on new type 2 diabetes treatments in Abu Dhabi

The 1985 winner of the Nobel Laureate for Medicine, Dr Michael Brown, will speak about his new findings in the treatment and possible cure of Type 2 diabetes at a conference in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday October 19.

The conference is being organized by the Higher Colleges of Technology and Invest AD and is under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor, Higher Colleges of Technology. Sheikh Nahyan will deliver the opening address at the conference.

Dr Michael Brown, who is a Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, will speak about transformational breakthroughs in human disease, including the impact of the discovery of the LDL receptor on the treatment of cardiovascular disease and new understandings of diabetes and its complications. Dr Brown is also Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of NGM Biopharmaceuticals.

A major topic of discussion at the one-day conference will include “breakthroughs in diabetes: moving towards a cure”, where speakers, including NGM Biopharmaceuticals founder and President Dr. Jin-Long Chen, will discuss the treatment approaches to diabetes and their limitations and also review the landmark research around metabolic surgery and diabetes remission.

The conference, to be held from 10am at the Health Sciences Auditorium at the CERT Technology Park in Abu Dhabi, will give delegates the opportunity to meet with Dr Brown and his fellow speakers for discussions on the latest work and research into the cure and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.

HCT Vice Chancellor Dr Tayeb Kamali said the conference was of great significance to the United Arab Emirates.

“The improvement of the health of the UAE’s citizens is a major priority for this country and the HCT is pleased to facilitate the eminent Nobel Laureate Dr Brown and other distinguished experts coming to Abu Dhabi to discuss a topic which is one of our nation’s highest priorities,” Dr Kamali said.

“The United Arab Emirates and the surrounding region have some of the highest rates of Type 2 Diabetes in the world. Hence the discovery of better treatments with fewer side effects is essential to improving the quality of health of the citizens.”, he added.
