A periodical report prepared by the World Health Organisation (WHO’s) office about the reinforcement of the health systems that depend on the primary health care in the Eastern Mediterranean countries praised the efforts exerted by the Sultanate in providing the health care.
The report lauded the Health Ministry of the Sultanate for considering the primary health care, as one of the most important factors in the health care system for the country.
The WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean is holding its 57th four-day session in Cairo for the second consecutive day. The Sultanate’s delegation represented by Dr Mohammed bin Saif bin Sultan Al Hosni, undersecretary of the Health Ministry for Health Affairs, is taking in the session.
The report, which is being discussed by the meetings of the regional committee highlighted the most important achievements in the field of the primary health care that were witnessed in the Sultanate in 2009.
Among the main achievements was the merger of the non communicable diseases clinics in all the primary health care centres and their improvement, as well as, adding new drugs to the list of the main drugs of the primary health care.
The report also referred that the Ministry of Health improved the services being offered by the medical laboratories by resorting to the continuous medical education for the technical workers.
In addition, it organised continuous seminars that aim at improving the communication skills for doctors and nurses who are working in the field of the primary health care, as well as, increasing the percentage of the workers who are able to speak Arabic from 65 per cent in 2005 to 88 per cent in 2009, in addition, to increasing the facilities of the primary health care.
The session has been discussing several issues including the fight against tobacco, in addition, to a report about reinforcing the health systems that depends on the primary health care and another report about the significant updates in the efforts of eradicating the poliomyelitis.
The session also discussed the annual report of 2009 for the regional manager about the actions of WHO in Eastern Mediterranean Region, in addition, to the strategic trends that aim at improving the health care finance in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
