State health officials have found the West Nile virus present in mosquitoes tested in Medford, the city announced.
It was unclear exactly where in the community the Massachusetts Department of Public Health technicians found the mosquitoes.
The Medford Board of Public Health said the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Program has a vigorous prevention program, and it recommends residents take the following precautions: Get rid of standing water, use sprays with DEET, and wear long sleeves and pants during periods of peak mosquito activity at dawn, dusk, and during the night.
Mosquitoes that develop in water-holding containers are the primary sources of the virus, while those that transmit Eastern equine encephalitis usually originate in wetlands, the board said in a prepared statement.
