Doctor sues Health Ministry over cupping ban

An Arab doctor is locked in a legal battle with the Ministry of Health for its decision to ban him from practising cupping, a traditional Arabian treatment involving sticking cups on the skin.

The unidentified doctor told a court in Fujairah that he had obtained the Health Ministry’s permission to open a clinic for cupping (hijama) treatment seven years ago, Alkhaleej Arabic language newspaper reported on Wednesday.

But the ministry later decided to shut his clinic on the grounds he did not meet the conditions needed for this profession, the paper said.

He told court that he is a qualified doctor holding certificates from recognised universities.
