Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah commended Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah and his team of officials at the Ministry of Health for successful stem-cell transplant surgery performed recently at the King Fahd Specialist Hospital-Dammam.
The hospital performed the stem-cell transplant operations on two patients suffering from blood plasma tumors in procedures described as the first ever at a Ministry of Health hospital.
Both patients are reported to be in excellent health following the surgery.
Responding to the king’s message, the health minister thanked the monarch and Crown Prince Sultan, minister of defense and aviation, for their support in looking after the health needs of the Kingdom.
“Such words of encouragement from the leadership triggers a moral boost to the health officials who offer their best services in the sector,” said the minister. “This step comes in a series of steps that established KFSH-D as a highly specialized center of tertiary care in the Eastern Province.”
He also mentioned that the hospital managed 2,500 new cancer cases over the last four years.
Khalid M. Al-Shaibani, chief executive officer (CEO) of King Fahd Specialist Hospital-Dammam, said the activity of the multi-organ transplant program has had similar successful outcomes to that of North American and European centers.
The hospital is one of the medical cities that is part of the Ministry of Health strategy to deliver highly specialized health care to their patients.
Stem cell treatments are a type of intervention strategy that introduces new cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. Many medical researchers believe that stem cell treatments have the potential to change the face of human disease and alleviate suffering.
