Breast Cancer patients should not be left unsatisfied following reconstructive surgery, warns leading UK cosmetic surgeon and former C4 Embarrassing Bodies expert Dalvi Humzah.
A member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, Mr Humzah is calling on all breast cancer patients to expect more from their reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy.
The number of women diagnosed with the disease in the UK has now risen from around 46,000 to 47,000 according to the latest statistics from Breast Cancer Care (2011).
Over the past twelve months, Mr Humzah’s clinic – Plastic and Dermatology Surgery (PDS) – has seen a significant increase in the number of breast cancer patients requesting further reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy due to ‘poor’ and ‘undesirable’ results.
He said: “With breast cancer being diagnosed in one in eight women in the UK, it has never been so important for women to feel confident in the results of reconstructive surgery following breast cancer.
“Women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer should not feel uncomfortable in approaching specialist cosmetic surgeons for further reconstructive treatment following their original reconstructive surgery.
“Following feedback from breast cancer patients who have visited us during the last twelve months, it is obvious women feel embarrassed and are holding themselves back from seeking desirable cosmetic results, as they feel they should just be lucky to be alive.
“After undergoing extensive treatment for breast cancer and dealing with the emotional trauma and upset of a mastectomy, breast cancer patients need to be confident in the results of their reconstructive surgery. More than this, breast cancer patients deserve the right to be happy with the shape and appearance of their reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy.”
Mr Humzah has operated on a number of breast cancer patients to both enhance and improve the results of reconstructive surgery. This often includes making the operated breast look more natural and symmetrical.
One of Mr Humzah’s patients said: “I chose to come and see Mr Humzah through personal recommendation as I was unhappy with the results of my first operation.”
