Actor Greg Grunberg discusses top issues in epilepsy advocacy

Posted on August 6, 2026

Navigating the Challenges of Epilepsy: A Doctor’s Perspective on Greg Grunberg’s Advocacy

Actor Greg Grunberg

As an actor, producer and comic book author, Greg Grunberg has led a busy life. But no matter what is happening around him, he always has time for a phone call from his son, Jake.
Jake, the oldest of three, started having seizures at age 7 years, 23 years ago. It came as a surprise to Grunberg, who said his family has no history of epilepsy.
“We didn’t know anything about it,” Grunberg told Healio. “He would have staring spells, and that developed into every kind of seizure you can imagine.”
Jake wound up having a difficult case to treat, Grunberg said. Diagnosed with a form of drug resistant

Navigating the Challenges of Epilepsy: A Doctor’s Perspective on Greg Grunberg’s Advocacy

From the Clinic: An Original Analysis of Epilepsy Advocacy

The personal testimony of actor Greg Grunberg regarding his son Jake’s enduring battle with epilepsy offers a profound glimpse into the realities faced by millions worldwide. Jake’s journey, which began 23 years ago with subtle “staring spells” and evolved into a complex case of drug-resistant epilepsy, resonates deeply within the medical community. As a healthcare professional, I frequently encounter families who, much like the Grunbergs, navigate the initial shock of diagnosis, the bewildering array of seizure types, and the relentless pursuit of effective management.

Grunberg’s narrative powerfully underscores several critical issues in epilepsy care and advocacy. The revelation that his family initially “didn’t know anything about it” highlights a pervasive lack of public awareness. This knowledge gap often leads to delayed diagnosis, misunderstanding, and persistent stigma. Furthermore, Jake’s experience with a “difficult case to treat” and “drug-resistant” epilepsy points to one of the most challenging frontiers in neurology: for a significant percentage of patients, current medications simply do not provide seizure control, necessitating a broader scope of therapeutic options and intensive research.

From a clinical standpoint, Grunberg’s public voice is invaluable. It serves as a beacon for:

  • Enhanced Public Education: Demystifying epilepsy and its varied manifestations, from subtle absence seizures to more overt tonic-clonic episodes.
  • Challenging Stigma: Personal stories from public figures help dismantle archaic prejudices and misconceptions, fostering empathy and acceptance for individuals living with epilepsy.
  • Driving Research and Development: Emphasizing the urgent need for new and more effective treatments, particularly for drug-resistant forms, which significantly impact quality of life and carry higher risks.
  • Supporting Caregivers: Acknowledging the immense emotional, physical, and financial burden on families, and advocating for better support systems and resources for these unsung heroes.
  • Improving Access to Specialized Care: Highlighting the disparities in access to specialized epilepsy centers, advanced diagnostics, and multidisciplinary teams critical for complex cases.

The challenges of drug-resistant epilepsy, where seizures persist despite optimal trials of multiple anti-seizure medications, demand innovative solutions—ranging from advanced surgical techniques and neurostimulation devices to novel pharmaceutical targets. Advocacy like Grunberg’s is instrumental in catalyzing discussions among policymakers, pharmaceutical companies, researchers, and healthcare providers, ensuring these critical areas receive the attention and funding they desperately need.

Background on Epilepsy: Understanding the Neurological Landscape

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. A seizure is essentially a transient occurrence of signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. It’s a condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, or socioeconomic background.

What is Epilepsy?

  • Prevalence: Globally, epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people, making it one of the most common neurological conditions.
  • Causes: While about half of epilepsy cases have no identifiable cause (idiopathic), known factors include genetic predispositions, head trauma, stroke, brain infections (e.g., meningitis), certain developmental disorders, and brain tumors.
  • Types of Seizures: Seizures are broadly categorized based on where they begin in the brain:
    • Focal Seizures: Originate in one specific area of the brain. Symptoms vary widely depending on the affected region and can include altered awareness, involuntary movements, sensory disturbances, or unusual emotional responses. Jake’s initial “staring spells” could be a manifestation of focal impaired awareness seizures or generalized absence seizures.
    • Generalized Seizures: Involve both sides of the brain from the outset. Examples include tonic-clonic seizures (formerly grand mal), absence seizures (brief periods of staring and unresponsiveness), myoclonic jerks, and atonic (drop) attacks.
  • Diagnosis: The diagnostic process typically involves a detailed patient history, neurological examination, electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brain activity, and neuroimaging such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to detect structural abnormalities.

Drug-Resistant Epilepsy: A Significant Challenge

A crucial aspect highlighted by Jake’s story is drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), also known as refractory epilepsy. This is diagnosed when a patient’s seizures persist despite adequate trials of two appropriately chosen and tolerated anti-seizure medications (ASMs), either taken alone or in combination. DRE impacts about one-third of individuals with epilepsy and is associated with:

  • Higher morbidity and mortality.
  • Increased risk of injury, cognitive impairment, and mental health comorbidities like depression and anxiety.
  • Significant reduction in quality of life.

For patients with DRE, treatment options extend beyond oral medications to include epilepsy surgery (if a resectable seizure focus is identified), neurostimulation devices (such as Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)), and specific dietary therapies like the ketogenic diet.

Why Epilepsy Advocacy Matters: A Path to Progress

The work of advocates like Greg Grunberg transcends individual stories, creating a ripple effect that benefits the entire epilepsy community and society at large. His dedication to discussing the “top issues in epilepsy advocacy” is a powerful force for change:

  • Combating Stigma and Promoting Inclusion: For centuries, epilepsy has been misunderstood, leading to social isolation, discrimination in employment, and educational barriers. Public advocacy humanizes the condition, challenging outdated stereotypes and fostering a more accepting, inclusive society. When public figures share their experiences, it normalizes epilepsy and encourages open dialogue.
  • Empowering Patients and Caregivers: Sharing personal stories creates a vital sense of community and support. Patients and their families often feel isolated; hearing from others navigating similar challenges can be incredibly empowering, encouraging them to seek resources, ask questions, and actively participate in their treatment plans.
  • Driving Research and Innovation: Increased awareness and public support translate into greater political will and philanthropic investment in epilepsy research. Funding is critical for discovering new anti-seizure medications, refining surgical techniques, developing advanced neurostimulation therapies, and exploring genetic and precision medicine approaches for conditions like drug-resistant epilepsy.
  • Improving Healthcare Policy and Access: Advocates play a crucial role in lobbying for policies that improve healthcare access, ensure insurance coverage for all necessary treatments, and fund specialized epilepsy centers. They also push for better training for healthcare professionals to ensure early and accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
  • Enhancing Quality of Life and Preventing Complications: Ultimately, advocacy aims to improve the lives of those living with epilepsy. By promoting early diagnosis, effective management, and robust support systems, it helps prevent the long-term cognitive, psychological, and physical complications associated with uncontrolled seizures, fostering independence and well-being.

Greg Grunberg’s efforts are a testament to the transformative power of personal experience translated into public service. By shining a light on the intricacies of epilepsy and the critical need for continued advocacy, he contributes significantly to a future where individuals with epilepsy receive timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and live in a world free from stigma and misunderstanding. This collective pursuit of progress is vital for ensuring that no family has to face the challenges of epilepsy alone.
