Following an inspection campaign that lasted for five months, the Ministry of Environment has recalled 151 types of shampoo products from the local market that failed to meet the Qatar standards and specifications.
The campaign was launched by the Laboratories and Standardisation Department at the Ministry in May following a ban on the import of all shampooes containing 1,4 Dioxane, a toxic chemical which is known to cause cancer.
Of the 151 products that have already been recalled, 90 were found to be containing the toxic chemical in high proportions. Samples of all the products under question had been obtained during the campaign and sent for laboratory tests.
The Ministry has made it mandatory for all importers of shampoo products to produce a certificate from an accredited laboratory in the countries of origin showing that the product does not contain 1,4 Dioxane. Strict vigil was mounted on all ports of entry to ensure that no tainted shampoo products enter the market.
The inspection campaign marked the culmination of the first phase of a new programme to monitor all cosmetic products in the market. The campaign was launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, the Supreme Council of Health and the Ministry of Business and Trade.
