BAHRAIN’s 26th patient to die of sickle cell disease this year yesterday sparked further condemnation among campaigners, who are blaming officials for negligence.
Thirty-year-old Manal Ahmed Hussain, from Karannah, was brought to Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) on Saturday and was in the accident and emergency department’s resuscitation room (RR) for two days, the campaigners claimed.
“Her family were told there was no room in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) so she was treated in the RR,” said Bahrain Society for Sickle Cell Anaemia Patient Care chairman Zakareya Ebrahim Al Kadhem.
He said Ms Hussain died on Monday while under treatment when her plasma level fell extremely low and she suffered extensive bleeding from her eyes and ears.
“We have reason to believe she could have been saved had she been transferred to the ICU well in advance,” Mr Al Kadhem told the GDN.
“This has been the story with seven other patients so far this year.”
He said Ms Hussain’s husband, who is a landscape specialist at the Works Ministry, had pledged to take up the matter with the Health Ministry.
“We will do all we can to assist him,” Mr Al Kadhem added.
Of the 25 people who died this year, Syed Abdulla Syed Jameel, 24; Mohammed Habib, 40; Ali Jaffer, 32; Ameena Syed Aqeel, 24; Reem Haffadh, 24; Jassim Ali, 25; and Mohammed Dawood, 25 are alleged to have died as a result of negligence.
The latest victim before Ms Hussain was father-of-four Abdulrasool Hassan Mohammed Al Shaikh, 47, who died at the SMC on September 7, days before he was scheduled to leave for Germany for a bone marrow transplant.
There were 25 deaths of sickle cell patients reported in the hospital last year.
