In line with its strategy to raise awareness to the public on health related matters, the National Health Insurance Company – Daman is marking the International World Diabetes Day that is celebrated on the 14th of November every year by hosting a series of activities in its branches.
The World Diabetes Day is a worldwide campaign, and Daman will be joining global organisations around the world in illuminating its building in blue. Onlookers on Hamdan Street in Abu Dhabi will witness Daman’s headquarters building light up in blue on the evening of Sunday the 14th of November in order to mark this occasion.
Additionally, a series of activities will be held across Daman’s branches that include distributing informative collateral to staff and customers regarding Diabetes symptoms and means of prevention.
Daman’s Disease Management Programme (DMP) will also be offering a free diabetes screening to staff members on the day. The screening will include measuring height/weight/waist circumference, as well as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and fasting blood glucose.
Dr. Jad Aoun, Chief Medical Officer of Daman said: “According to the World Health Organization, approximately 18.7 per cent of the UAE’s population suffers from diabetes which constitutes the second highest rate in the world.
With this campaign, we hope to create positive awareness of diabetes, its symptoms and preventative measures.” The UAE population continues to suffer the highest rate of type II diabetes as a result of unhealthy lifestyle choices.
There is a continuing effort to drive awareness to the disease as according to the World Health Organization, 58% of type II diabetes is preventable by simply adopting a healthier way of life, including increased physical activity and a balanced diet.
“To add to our commitment in raising awareness on Diabetes and the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles, Daman for the fourth consecutive year is supporting and sponsoring the annual diabetes walkathon held by Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) on Yas Marina Circuit ” concluded Dr. Jad Aoun.
