Dr. Atul Mehta, Chief Medical Officer at SKMC, believes that holding this meeting enhances SKMC role as a provider of comprehensive state-of-the-art patient care services, and as an active promoter of continuous medical education (CME) and state-of-the-art surgical services in Abu Dhabi.
“Our physicians are eager to share their experience and knowledge with their colleagues and we are proud to organize this meeting as part of our obligation towards the community of healthcare professionals. What makes this meeting unique is that a wide scope of hand and shoulder procedures and treatments will be presented and discussed in depth,” Dr. Mehta stated.
Dr. Mohamad Louay Jabban, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at SKMC and one of the organizing committee members of the Fourth Hand and Shoulder Surgery meeting stated, “The goal of our meeting today is to exchange ideas and share experiences related to shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand disorders and to review new treatments of complex hand and shoulder problems related to orthopedic surgeries. We are also proud to dedicate a session about rheumatology and its relation with orthopedic surgery.” The Chairman of Surgery Institute at SKMC, Dr. Michel Bussieres commented, “SKMC Surgery Institute is willing to continuously organize surgery-related conferences, symposiums and activities such as the Hand and Shoulder Scientific Meeting. It is our Institute’s mission to encourage and promote scientific and medical education programs in addition to providing advanced surgical services at SKMC that meet internationally recognized standards of excellence to the residents of the UAE.” From his side, Dr. Ali Al Suwaidi said, “At SKMC’s orthopedic surgery department, we performed almost 200 hand and shoulder surgeries in 2010 with high success results comparable to international standards. We receive a lot of complex cases, and some revision cases done elsewhere. Our internationally trained and highly qualified medical cadre of the Orthopedic Surgery department includes 14 Orthopedic Surgeons aiming to provide an exceptionally professional service in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and UAE.” “The Orthopedic Division at SKMC continues to complement their high volume of clinical activities with continuous educational opportunities in the field of hand and shoulder surgery. In addition to the 4th Hand and Shoulder Surgery Meeting, SKMC will also be hosting the first Middle East Instructional Course Shoulder Prosthesis brought by the Swiss Arab Postgraduate Clinical Academy (SAPCA) and the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopedics and Traumatology. The two-day course, scheduled on 19 – 20 May 2011, is designed to contribute to the sharing of expertise and a deeper understanding of the current body of knowledge on aspects of shoulder joint replacement. The course will be accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) and the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (HAAD) with approx. 12 CME hours. It targets orthopedic surgeons locally and within the region. Those are high caliber meetings with invited international faculty aiming to provide local surgeons with unique educational activities obviating the need to travel abroad.” Dr. Lucia Heras-Garcia added, “Such meetings are very important to improve the quality of hand surgery among surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists in the UAE and to give the opportunity to train more young surgeons interested in this field. For the second time, we have the shoulder and hand surgeons collaborate together in this meeting, and it is the first time that we have invited our colleagues in rheumatology to this meeting. Rheumatologists will give us their special point of view and share their experiences in dealing with complex hand and shoulder problems.” “Our International speakers are coming from Spain, Germany and Lebanon and we expect to be able to exchange ideas and have exiting and interesting discussions in some complex subjects like the comminute intra-articular fractures of the distal radius,” Dr. Heras concluded.
